Moving from the public sector to the private sector: how to prepare your CV and navigate the transition

Moving from a public sector career to a role in the private sector can be both exciting and challenging.

Many professionals make this change in search of higher earning potential, faster career progression, greater innovation or the chance to see more immediate, tangible impact from their work. Yet the transition requires a shift in mindset, language and self-presentation, particularly when crafting a CV that resonates with commercial employers.
One of the biggest differences between the two sectors lies in expectations. Public sector roles tend to prioritise policy, process, compliance and governance. Decision-making can be slower, and much of the work is shaped by public interest rather than profit. Conversely, the private sector typically operates at a faster pace and places emphasis on efficiency, adaptability and measurable business outcomes. Employers prioritise performance metrics, financial results and competitive advantage and look for candidates who can contribute to these goals.

When preparing a CV for a private sector role it is essential to reframe your experience in a way that highlights your transferable skills and demonstrates commercial understanding. A strong opening summary can immediately position you as an attractive candidate by emphasising your core expertise and signalling your readiness for a commercially driven environment.

When detailing your career history, instead of focusing on the responsibilities you held in public sector roles, concentrate on your achievements, explaining what you delivered and your impact to showcase your value. Using metrics, even approximate ones, can make your contributions far more compelling.

Many public sector professionals underestimate how many of their skills translate seamlessly into private sector roles. Project management, stakeholder engagement, data analysis, risk management, leadership and change delivery are all universally valued, so highlighting these competencies can help hiring managers quickly understand your strengths. It also helps to emphasise tools and technologies you have used because private sector employers often prioritise candidates who can operate in tech-enabled environments.

Despite the strengths public sector professionals bring, the move to the private sector can present challenges. One common hurdle is translating government focused language into terminology that resonates commercially.  Choosing the right keywords is crucial, especially for CVs that will pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), so it is essential to identify and use language employers expect.

Another challenge is demonstrating commercial awareness, especially for roles that previously did not involve revenue or profit metrics. Bias can occasionally play a role too; some hiring managers assume that public sector employees are less dynamic or innovative, so candidates who can share examples of agility, multi-tasking or rapid problem solving will position themselves more favourably.

Overcoming these perceptions requires confidence and clarity in how you communicate your achievements, your adaptability and your impact.

Ultimately, a successful transition comes down to reframing your experience in your CV; removing jargon, quantifying results and highlighting the versatility of your skills can make a dramatic difference to the way your CV is received. Tailoring your CV for each application is also essential, as is demonstrating cultural fit by showing that you are proactive, collaborative, results-oriented and comfortable working at pace.

For many professionals moving from the public sector to the private sector opens the door to new opportunities, broader experiences and accelerated growth. With a well-crafted CV and LinkedIn profile and a strategic approach, it is possible to make a compelling case for your value and step confidently into a private sector career.
